Have you tried the idle stabiliser?

Similar symptoms on my old 2.1 DJ were solved by bypassing this, (simple male-> female plug connection) and later replacing it.

boxxie, im pretty sure the engine will just stop if you disconnect the temp. sender that the ECU gets a reading from, cant remember which of the 2 on the thermostat housing it is, one is for the dash gauge. best bet to just replace it
