From the right honerable member from warrington, Beaker uses a BIG chunk of wood to bridge the gap between the chassis outriggers at the front and has that between the stand. I havent had much cause to lift the fronts for wheel work I have used those ramps when I have needed to get under the front. I dont think I meant 3 tonne I meant 6 tonne big chunky red with white square section lifting peice.
yes Bob's correct 6 tonne stands from Machine Mart £20
The big bits of wood are known load bearing quality hardwood that I can trust, don't use softwoods even thick bits can go suddenly.
I must admit I don't understand why VW didn't put on a proper jacking plate on the front crossmembers. I don't like using the bottom of the jacking points as they're not a very large contact point for a stand, ok on a ramp with cups of course.
picking up the 6 tonne stands from Mm tomorrow as i want to get busy fixinf the heating on my Aircooled
my question is can i use the standard vw jack to lift the van or should i buy a jack and if so whats the best one to get

I have never found the smaller trolley jacks have enough lift without getting one of the £60+ monster ones. A Clarke high lift jack with a land rover adapter does the job much better. again available from MM

im just back from MM, I was going to buy the jack you mentioned but the guy in MM told me he has had about 10 back and suggested this
he also offered a 5% discount cos I asked...
for the sake of £20 squid I may go for this unless anyone has a better idea
or the proverbial ebeee shop .. but postage might be an issue.
let me know what you decide. I will pop into MM on Monday if all goes to plan so will be interested in your decision!
Cheers

With these you can get some serious height esp good if doing Gbox/engine out stuff
with this to fit the "hole" in the chassis lift point. Check dimensions to check it fits but it should I am guessing if it fits the landy 90 which mine does here
I got my adapter off ebay more like this one here
i was about to order from MM (for £64 -5%) when I checked fleabay, someone local to me had one, he had lowered his car and now it wont fit under so I got it for £30
just to say its a decent bit of kit.
and so ends my 'search for a jack' saga, I can get on with the work now as soon as the rain stops
