had probs with misfiring, backfiring on mine [not an Aircooled tho,] first only when running on gas, then on petrol too,
symptoms were . . . fine until up to temp. then misfires occasionally, then big backfire and engine stops, will not re-start.
wont restart/run properly again til cool, then fine until normal temp reached again, and back to misfiring etc.
turned out to be the magnetic pick-up sensor in the dist. base plate breaking down when warm, i changed a lot of parts un-neccesarily before i found out it was this, like coil, plug leads dist cap, plugs, rotor, ign amp module, etc etc. probs showed up on gas months before running on petrol was affected as gas is loads more fussy about ign stuff being tip-top.
i wrongly thought it was a gas system prob to begin with but 9 times out of 10 they are massively reliable and not to blame, ign stuff usually the culprit, if a new coil dont fix it [they can be known to pack up when hot, but work fine when cool too] the dist baseplate could be worth looking at

the baseplate [from gsf] had a different style 3 pin connector on it to mine but its the only one they do, had to cut the plug and about 6inch of wiring off a golf at the scrappers and graft it in to my wiring, to connect it up, but mine had very brittle and cracked/hardened insulation anyway close to the connector, and exposed copper inner wire, so it was a good move to solder in new bits anyway in my case.
fitting the base plate not too dificult, just be VERY careful not to lose the tiny locating dowel in a groove on the cntr. shaft! take your one to the shop to compare it, your plug might be the same and not need modding.
think it set me back about 30 quid for the baseplate.
