Goblin did they plate over where the old rails were as they are a strengthing member and just bolting new seats on their rails will not return that strength. Sorry to be a scarer but i had to weld 3mm plates over mine when i removed them for bucket seats to return the strength and to stop me ending up in the back as the seats can rock and tear thru the metal.

No he didn't. Took original seats out, grind rails off, drill hole, bolt seats in using washers and 4 M8 bolts with nyloc nuts. Even more concerned now bearing in mind MOT is next week. Wednesday I think but van is going in on Monday.

BTW they're on swivel bases, one of which won't lock in position all the time - drivers side...I can see an MOT failiure coming on :(

What about VW seats from late model cars? Are the runners the same so they will slot straight in? No one ever mentions Passat seats or similar, any particular reason why not?

I have golf 4 gti seats in both of mine, nightmare to fit, alot of welding.

U either need to put full length heavy gauge plates under the swivels or weld a plate up top, below is easier n just bolts in tho puttin em up in the box sections is difficult hence why i just welded 2 full length plates in.
The MoT man will probably not notice unless you have it rocking about and cracks are apearing around the bolt holes. But please fix it for your own and your passengers saftey.

Thanks, will get it sorted ASAP. It may be a case of MOT man finds it bearing in mind it's going to a VW specialist, so since we're off on holiday in it on Sunday, we're basically saying any thing that is found that fails it's MOT, just sort it.

Hmmmmmmm, just spoken to a (quality) engineer about the issue, and he said that it shouldn't be a problem. If fitted correctly, the seats should strengthen the base again and bolt holes will only flex and crack, if they have not been bolted down tightly enough.

He says we'll see what comes up on MOT and when it goes into the body shop we'll get the problem sorted anyway.
