yeah they cost but a second hand set dont cost that much............. i've know cos ive done it!!!!
i can only assume the motor in yours wasnt set right fella.
As for the carbs its horses for courses, speed costs how fast do you want to go??
each to their own when it comes to engine choice but im an Aircooled fella thru and thru.
all these motors need is someone who understands em and knows what they are doing.
In ,my opinion a good well tuned Aircooled cu is the same if not better performance than a dieseasil anyday!!!!

as the owner of a transport company, i will hold you to that, lets bet on it. say £300 as a wager, if you can get 40+ mpg with the same torque as my 19d, the money is yours. plus the heater ALWAYS works. i wonder why they stick diesel engines in commercial vehicles

oh i restored a 1.6 gay window last year(brand new engine in) then there was my 72 beetle. i may as well have poured petrol down the drain. 1930s technology is not really up to the mark

Advice has been given, you commented on a post that wasn't aimed at you
Like I said in my previous post, a 2.0 cu wasn't designed to go in a T25........its underpowered and as someone else said its thirsty......don't know what you were expecting performance wise but as several others have said, its slow and thirsty which is what you've got.
Nothing wrong with Aircooled motors they just need to be in the right vehicle.

If you had taken the time to read my post correctly you would have noted that i stated "performance" not economy.which i stand by. i doubt very much your na diesel has the horsepower of my mildly tuned Aircooled motor but lets not turn this into a my vans faster than your van, my dads bigger than yours etc etc!!!. As you have stated, your a fleet manager you know no petrol motor can compete with with diesel economy.I understand you have a dislike for Aircooled, i personally, dont like diesels, but i dont want to argue all day about it!! live and let live i say!
smithybluebus, dont be put off, these things will properly motor when set right, get yourself to raceshack and they will do the biz for you. if you need any info drop me a pm chap.
good luck jase

in fairness chap if you read all of weasel chins posts they have been a little derogatory and unhelpful. i find the volkszone remark a little unnessacary too, do you want to send members away just because they have a differing opinion?? i always like healthy discussion me!! people post here for advice and help, not sarcasm and "your van is crap" attitude displayed earlier. what a rubbish attitude to take with people.

each to his own chaps,,, don't rise to small minded comments. my Aircooled returns about 26 to the gallon,, does 65-70 on the motorway and 45-50 up all but the worst of hills. it is what it is and i like it.
use the dots on the speedo to make sure you gear down soon enough and the revs stay up. miss it and it's too late.
i have a mondeo turbo diesel for long distance with economy and a hayabusa if i feel like going fast. my bus is for pleasure at a chilled out pace when i feel like it so it'll do. imho n/a diesels are the pits for performance and sound like tractors

Hi Weazlechin.
Yup the 19d is everything you say I don't think anyone will disagree diesel is still the choice for a commercial vehicles. ;)zzz
But your missing a trick, It's a pity you don't "get it" when it comes to Aircooled. IMHO They are not about torque, mpg or economy.
I may be a sado

but my Aircooled T25 brings me joy.
It has opened up a new world of great friends and I am sure if you dig deep in you soul you may still find a little T25 Aircooled love.

I enjoyed my T2 1600cc twin port Aircooled bay which i owned for many years. The engine was easy to sort if there where problems and the fuel consumption was aprox 26/28 mpg.I had a T25 devon conversion automatic 2ltr cu fuel consumption if i was lucky 16/17 mpg .The engine leaked oil even after loads of work replacing seals performance okay i suppose for a heavy van.Previous to the devon i had a T25 1600cc diesel and a T4 1.9 diesel and now run a T25 1.6td .For me diesel is the choice good fuel consumption and the mechanics of the VW 1.6 /1.9 /td are nearly the same for changing.Diesel for me anytime for the T25.
