Fuel tank breather tanks -to have or not to have?

Post by brookie »

Hi there!
I had a long think about the future of my breather tanks when I had the front wheel-arches replaced in March on our Scooby. I was worried about putting them back in as they were such a corrosion trap so did not refit them. Instead I've got lovely clean wheelarches that are easy to hose out every now and again. :)
What I did with the 2 flexy hoses going to the bottom of each expansion tank was connect them to a 'Y' connector and then fitted a longer flexy hose to the remaining hole on 'Y' connector. I then guided this hose up into the inner of the wheelarch above the metal fuel-tank. This simply vents to atmosphere to allow for expansion and contraction of fuel in main tank. I shrouded the end of this vent tube (with a long grommet) and ensured it was pointing away from the wheel and downwards to prevent any dirt getting in. I found a p clip was the best way to secure this hose.
For info the top of the expansion tank has a vent tube coming from it which goes to the very same area I now have my 'new' vent so no lines have been blocked off and refuelling to max is no problem.
You must run your vent line high in the wheelarch so it's high point is ABOVE the filler point or you could vent liquid fuel and not just vapour if/when you brim it!
I've had absolutely no probs running like this and we brim it. I understand the points about cold bunkered fuel expanding when it warms up so I'll watch it if I ever fill up on a very hot day (hope we get some :) )
If it does vent liquid fuel in that situation I just won't fill it all the way but like I said we've had no leaks
Hope this helps in your decisions!

yes except the pipes running to the expansion tank are not connected as this are the seal which have corroded away to nowt.

i cleaned the cow "pooh" off before working on mine

That sounds a lot easier than messin' around trying to find the right size grommets.

any chance of a piccy?

Fuel tank breather tanks -to have or not to have?

Post by brookie »

Hi West E

I'm afraid I haven't got time to put a piccy up but read on and I'll summarize again as it's simple.
Looking at the earlier picture someone posted of the tanks (good effort that man) join the two tubes that go to the bottom of exp' tank onto a Y connector. Now join a new tube to the remaining stub on the Y and secure with a P clip or similar to the inner arch.
Obviously you will have no need for exp' tank so remove it complete with its vent tube (this tube is pictured above the pair of tubes that you've just removed from the exp' tank stubs)
To repeat, make sure the end of the new vent tube is shrouded or pointing down (to stop dirt getting into main tank) and is above the level of the filler.
Job's a good 'un! :)

if the bus didnt need em vw wouldnt have made em. remove at your peril!!! think how much less each bus would have cost.......... it would have save millions!!!
so they ARE there for a reason
just run fuel pipe from the breather on the tank to the expansion bottle. i think 10mm pipe works best.

Fuel tank breather tanks -to have or not to have?

I agree with you Jason, the tanks are fitted for a reason - to allow fuel liquid to expand without leaking out of the vent tube. Don't forget though VW sold the van all over the world to a lot hotter climates than ours (ie Africa) where temps are frequently high 30s. Therefore this fuel expansion would be a problem without the tanks to store it. It was probably cheaper for VW to include the tanks generically on all models across the globe so that's the reason us in cooler UK got them.
Unless you're planning a trip to a hot climate and you're brimming your tank and then not driving it on a hot day you really won't have a problem - I haven't! :)
Even VW can't be right all the time!
