First of all don't bother with the garrage !!! Learn how to replace the alternator yourself (eg. get a Haynes or Robert Bentley Manual and get some tools or alternatively look out for a T25 manual on CD from Ebay).
Replacing the alternator is a quite simple job on the Type 2 T3 (unlike on beetles where it can take up to a day to do).
It sounds like that you have damaged the alternator beyond repair by doing up the fan belt far too tight on the first place. This may have caused the alternator's bearings to rapidly wear leading to premature failiure (this was the case of my mexican beetle's second "super duper 75A rebuilt" alternator, please learn from this mistake !!).
Another possiblity is that the alternator may just be worn out (this was the case of my mexican beetle's first alternator).
Try replacing the brushes (and the alternator belt) on your alternator first and tighten the alternator belt correctly as described in my previous posts.
Also check the condition of the pulley on the alternator its self. If it is warped or cracked, then it must be replaced at once !!! This could also be a sign that the alternator's bearings (and possibly the alternator its self) has been damaged beyond repair and must be replaced. This would be due to overtightening the alternator belt.
If the alternator light still fails to go out after you have started the engine, then the alternator must be replaced.

Thanks for all your suggestions. After much fiddling and cursing and getting covered in black oil I managed to get it going again. Three screws on the lower pulley are the hardest to get in again and you must have them lined up and screw in a bit at a time One turn to that screw, another to that one. Bleedin' awkward but done.
