not had a new thermostat.
im going to fit a new coolant bottle and cap, i have to get the later one as they dont sell the early bottles any more.
i will run the engine with this, if it still overheats ill take out the thermostat and try running it without that in.

Dridgy if you mean me yes i had cylinder head probs.I had the head skimmed refitted and no troubles but due to previous owner neglect there was other issues.Plastic flow & return connection engine&Rad connections butchered due to overtightened circlips.Expansion tank cracked & faulty cap & thermostat replaced with genuine VW parts . Engine re timed correctly with fuel pump.Took the van out today the temp gauge sat half way about 60 mph on a hill the gauge came just over midway.

i had a similar problem with mine, check all your hoses for warmth, especially the flow and return from the rad, on mine the return was cold,fitted another water pump and this cured the problem,its possible you could check the pump bearing by slackening the belt and giving the pulley a bit of movement, if it moves all over the place the bearings are shot... so change it, not expensive either.

Good point in the last post, is the water pump belt seen better days or lose.
