Excellent. Thank you so much for the insight. I’ve been debating a replacement vehicle but at this point, I know the bus so well, I am going to get it back on the road. I will take those pipes off today and check them. Really appreciate your time helping me with this.

Good point above regarding the long coolant pipes. I doubt they are original - they all seemed to fail about 10 years ago but who knows.
The originals were white plastic with a metal barb on the ends. The barbs rusted and split the plastic letting water out/air in.

Replaced with two part ss now with a join in the middle.

Gentlemen, my mechanic here in Dnipro, Ukraine, says he can't see how to install a transverse 1.9L Mk3 Golf motor in my 1981 T2.5 bus. He's quite experienced and a kind, honest guy. So I think he's willing to do the work but he's being upfront about the limits of his knowledge and experience. Would anyone be willing to write a bit about this installation which I could translate and pass on to him?

*He prefers to find and install a 1.6L diesel engine like the one he is replacing in the bus. I don't know enough to understand how great a difference exists between the two motors in terms of configuration and installation.
