I'm not questioning the sense in having it switched off, I wouldn't want to drive it into a fuel stop with the lit flame... But then again I've seen people refilling the main tanks from Large Tankers at fuel stops with a fag in their mouth...

Just the thought of being stopped by a copper, checking your tyres, checking your road tax, breath-a-lysed. Then climbing in and... A HA, you have left your fridge on gas, thats 3 points sir and... your nicked.

Surely, if its illegal, you could get done for smokin' a fag or driving around with a lit candle?

From memory Jen was filling the Super Shyte Bus at a petrol station when the petrol fumes pooled on the van floor through an open driver's door and came into contact with the fridge light Sad Shocked setting light to the interior trim.

that was more to do with having the cab door open while filling up with petrol rather than having the fridge on .

on another note not that i doubt you Owen ,but where does it say its illegal ?
It should be really ,
This has come up before and i asked then , can you buy a 12v flame detector that could be fitted to the fridge to light up an led or something to show that its still alight ?

Caravan Club website............basically its illegal to drive into a petrol station, tunnel or motorway service area with a naked flame as part of an LPG system.

Not that a Copper would possible go as far as to nick you for doing it. But think about it on a practical level...........naked flame, accident, split fuel...............BBBBOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMM..........toasted

"Also known as LPG and stored on-board in special replaceable steel bottles or cylinders which must be used in an upright position. A few motorhomes have permanent gas tanks which are topped up at refilling stations like LPG cars. There are also refillable bottles that can be topped up in the same way. Gas is needed for cooking and heating when not 'hooked-up' to mains electricity and will also run a 'three-way' fridge in similar circumstances. It cannot legally be used on the move in the UK nor in tunnels or on ferries where it must be turned off at the bottle. Permanent tanks are not allowed in some tunnels - the Channel Tunnel for example."

You're not wrong it drives you mad.
I dont generally use the fridge on gas whilst driving but thought That if its ok for the Germans, Its ok for us.
Especially as the Germans are so safety conscious.

main tanks from Large Tankers at fuel stops with a fag in their mouth

A fag isn't a naked flame. You can stub a fag out in a pool of petrol and the chance of any excitement is remote. Even if you dip the lit end in the petrol it will quickly put the fag out. I hear.

If you drive around with a candle in your hand then you should booked and locked up.

Isn't the clicky noise the fridge trying to relight itself?
