Thanks David, useful thread. What still puzzles me is what part of the Auto Choke at cold closes the Choke plate, according to info depressing the acc pedal should do this, mine at cold start doesn't do this, although when warmed up it does open.

Hopefully someone who knows exactly will come along but what happens when you press the accelerator to do the cold start procedure. There should be some movement on the little stepped cam?

Thanks David, there is mention of cam adjustment in the Haynes, so will look closer at that, as dont want to mess it up.

It's the coiled metal spring in the choke housing which snaps the choke flaps shut, this, via the cam, is released when either the throttle pedal is pressed or activated at the carb. Sounds like your choke is sticking, very common. You could try lubricating the choke mechanism/cam, with the carb in place as it sounds like it's working-ish.

Thanks, yes I have amongst his others and very useful, just viewed the Carb one again.

Thanks, I will give that a go, sprayed the whole external area with carb cleaner today will take a closer look at the parts you mentioned and spray lubricant where I can see.

Thanks all for tips and guidance, problem now sorted, bit of 3 in 1 oil on parts and moving a few items by hand appears to have worked. When cold starting, depressing of accelerator can be seen to partially close choke plate and when warmed up opens again. Wish I sorted this out years ago instead of putting up with it.

When you depress the accel pedal at cold it should close the choke fully, the vac pulldown unit should open the choke to about a 2.5mm gap (if I recall) when you start the engine then it will open up as the electric element does its thing along with the coolant warming up.

But to be fair if you've got it running and its OK then probs best to leave it be

Maybe saying partially closed was innaccurate, it closed to about 7/8 if not a bit more, then when warmed up, fully opened and vertical.

Update, took van out for a drive today, started ok, but 5 mins into drive, engine began coughing and spluttering and kept cutting out. Managed to struggle to a nearby fuel station. Took cover off carb as I thought the choke plate may have been stuck in closed position but it was ok and open. Engine would start but kept stalling. Called RAC as did not want to conk out on road. RAC guy managed to get it going said fuel filter looked a bit cloudy, asked if airfilter was ok, tweaked fast idle bit of spray down carb, did some 12v checks in engine bay, and I drove back ok with no further issues. Was thinking of going away this weekend but not until I get this sorted. What else me thinks

Have you removed the brass emulsion jet from the top of the carb and cleaned that yet?

Take pancake off and you'll see two brass jets, only one will have cut outs for a screwdriver.... get a good fitting flat bladed screwdriver
and take it out. You should be able to see a dot of light if you look through it, but it is a very small hole. give it a good clean and blow through.

  This has been the culprit a couple of times for me.

Thanks, seen that many times when looking into carb, didnt realise it could be removed so will try that.
