Re: Van Spluttered and now doesnt tick over
I wouldn't start adjusting the carb yet; something has changed and caused the lack of tickover, could it be water or crap in the carb still? What's the air filter like, could it have been affected by the misfiring?

Re: Van Spluttered and now doesnt tick over
Maybe fuel pump or pump pushrod is worn?
Low fuel and putting fuel in pulled debris up into carb?
Carb diaphragm split? rebuild/clean?
Check HT leads and coil to make sure in spec.
Check your wirings not loose to coil etc.
Plug looked OK from what I saw maybe ever so slightly lean?? Maybe a guru can check that

Re: Van Spluttered and now doesnt tick over
air filter is still clean and looks good, its less than 6 months old.
Stesaw....

fuel pump is about 8 months old too, i know that doesnt mean much as stuff does stop working.
Low fuel and putting fuel in pulled debris up into carb?
it had about a quarter of a tank in before filling up, its been way less before and no issues. but ya never know. But seems weird it all started after i filled up.
Carb diaphragm split? rebuild/clean?
carb is due a rebuild, got the kit ready but havent got round to it yet as everything was working fine. maybe nows the time! just a shame i'm meant to be taking it to newquay on the 5th and don't have spare time to do it now

Check HT leads and coil to make sure in spec.
new leads and a mate checked the coil over and reckons its working as intended
Check your wirings not loose to coil etc.
all wires look ok to me, but i don't even know enough to be an amateur yet lol

gonna take it to a local mechanic over the weekend, which i really didnt want to do but I don't have time to fault find at the moment

thanks for everyones input, when it is running i'll report back with whats been fixed / changed! (hopefully)

Re: Van Spluttered and now doesnt tick over
If it runs ok apart from tickover, then it's getting enough fuel.
Ignition timing needs to be checked...
What are the fuel hoses like (how old)?
I would strip the carb down and see what's inside....

Also check the condition of the vacuum advance pipe to the dizzy.

With what went under the cap, and the fact you noticed oil leaks around the dizzy, I'd be checking this area out first.
Check timing
Vacuum advance unit holding vacuum?
Wire fallen off the idle shut off valve on the carb?

Re: Van Spluttered and now doesnt tick over
If he can get the engine to run but not idle then I wouldn't have thoughts its the cutoff solenoid / related wiring otherwise it wouldn't go at all.
Timing or vacuum issues could cause idle problems for sure.

Re: Van Spluttered and now doesnt tick over
for now i've just adjusted the idle and its kind of running fine. no loss of power, no spluttering or mis firing when driving
there is a slight fluctuation on tick over, not all the time. does that point to an air leak somewhere?
the plugs are looking a bit lean now too

Re: Van Spluttered and now doesnt tick over
Could be the brake vac line from the manifold to the booster at the front. Mine caused me some headaches finding why it was running lean.

Re: Van Spluttered and now doesnt tick over
i'll have a check on that tomorrow.
thinking of getting a timing gun, is it straight forward to check / adjust timing? from what ive read it looks easy enough but i've always been scared of messing about with engine timing incase i completely mess things up.

Re: Van Spluttered and now doesnt tick over
To quote an old post
turn the engine so you can see the timing marks on the pulley where the aux belt is, there should be a U shape for TDC on one edge of pulley and a V shape about 7mm to the right on the other edge of the pulley, this is the 5 degrees before top dead centre mark (BTDC) mark both with tippex
Then connect your strobe light to plug lead no1 or clamp it on if it's the clamp on type, No1 cylinder is front of van right as you look from the rear.
connect the 12v power to strobe and ground to body, easiest place for 12V is the alternator bolt if it is a late van, if early van may need to get a connection to the stud in the black box.
get the leads away from the belt and pulley
start the engine
allow the choke to come off
remove the vac pipe from dizzy, (revs will drop a little) and point the timing gun at the pulley, you should see the marks, the V should align with centre of engine, that's the edge of the casting above.
if you have a rev counter you should set the idle stop to 900rpm after removing the vac pipe but if not don't worry
if it's out then you need to turn off engine, loosen pinch bolt on dizzy, restart engine and repeat, rotate dizzy until the V mark aligns with centre of engine, use rubber gloves, turn off engine and tighten without moving dizzy.
restart and check
refit vac pipe

Re: Van Spluttered and now doesnt tick over
meant to give an update on this.
checked the timing and it was good.
i replaced the rotor arm, cleaned plugs and put on a new vacuum pipe from the carb to the dizzy. and the van ran perfectly for my holiday, doing a round 750 miles with no issues at all.
i did notice that the top of the dizzy cap was not really secure and had a slight wobble, so when the van was running the top of the cap was moving. upon further inspection, the dust cover inside the cap (on top of the dizzy) was not lined up correctly so the cap didnt click in place where it should have,
not sure how this became mis aligned in the first place but it all seems ok at the moment.
i do have the small oil leak at the bottom of the dizzy, so need to get a new seal and see if i can get that fitted
