I have had exactly the same problem too. I had replaced my rear N/S wheel bearing 3 times (the last time it only lasted 50 miles).
In my case it was the rear N/S outer CV joint that was knackered and had only 5 bearings (out of 6) left in it where one of them had almost disintegrated. Personally I would do what I did and that is to replace all 4 CV joints.
The only thing that's odd in my case was that the knackered CV joint looked a lot newer than the other 3. I'll have to drive it for a bit to see if replacing all four CV joints has cured the problem or not.
Knockin from the rear got the mech's puzzled

Yeah me minds pretty much made up that the cv joints are in need of replacement.....
Just got back from my cumbria trip (400miles round trip) and from the off the knocking had disappeared completely
Still, I'm not knocking it (no pun intended) and though I know the problem hasnt solved itself I'm gonna enjoy having a few knock-free miles for the time being!!
By the way, fell in love with Cumbria, what a place, hard to believe you're in England at times. Felt right at home chuggin round them hills

lol - did this job today. Strange how having done it once you NEVER forget the mistakes you made the last time you did it. For starters remove driveshaft from gearbox end first as otherwise you end up trying to undo the bolts on the gearbox end last and no real way to lock the shaft solid!
Generally, the click does not mean the CV joint has had it. Often you can wash them out with paraffin/petrol/white spirits, dry thoroughly and repack with grease and all will be fine. If you want to change them fine, but its usually just a dried out CV joint.
Also, scrape out the sludge from inside bolt heads - it helps you get a better purchase if the bolts are stubborn. Oh, and wear latex gloves throughout!
