Getting into some fine detail now. I have started to get my order together for new parts but have found that there are two JX spigot bearings. Their numbers end in 630 & 631. Any knowledge of the difference or which to use? Do they change with relation to the gearbox fitted?
The manifold heat shields are priced thus. The two early parts are £13.76 each and the later piece is £21.98. Reckon I will just get the two bits.
Can anyone explain how the turbo cooling blower tube locates and mounts?
Clutch & sump gasket are much cheaper at motor factors - any reason to stick with OEM?
The AAZ hose from water pump to side of cylinder head has a spare 'way' which needs to be blocked. My hose is three sections clamped to a plastic tee piece. Rather than plug this spare, I reckon to seperate the parts and then rejoin the two wanted hoses with a short section of 25mm aluminium tube & hose clips. Any reasons against this?

I don't know, but the 2 nos I have for a syncro JX are:
056 105 313 C (Eng. No. up to JX 207 630)
111 105 313 A (Eng. No. from JX 207 631)
So its looks like engine/flywheel dependent..
I'd go for this one 111 105 313 A but check it sits nicely on the spigot and inside flywheel before going ahead, they're cheap from VW
I'd not worry about the blower, it'll pack up anyway ! Just let the motor idle for a minute before switching off if you've been blaring along with the turbo boosting hard - but defer to other opinions

It's a real bu**er to remove or refit this, it fits behind the filter-turbo pipe, and runs along just under the exhaust manifold. It's held in place by two or three tabs that screw to various other things, which will likely be rusted away anyhow. When I was recently refurbing various things in that area on my JX Syncro, I decided not to refit it. Like Clive says, the chances of it working reliably or doing any real good are limited, and I may need the space which was occupied by the blower motor for a charge-cooler.

I think VW were in very strange phase during these years, trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear maybe, or not given genuine development funds, just a get-by and make-do type budget..
I bet a few engineers breathed a sigh of relief when they went to entirely front-engined vehicles, and then there were some that saw the missed opportunities and said 'but what if....'

A quick update on the situation. It has been a bit long drawn out but my AAZ is now fitted - we got it running about 6.30 this evening. That was after a lot of churning over and re-charging of batteries to get fuel through the system and to unstick piston rings, valves etc and create sufficient compression to get it to fire. Given it was a 'mail-order' engine, I have no idea how long it has been out of use - 'sitting & sticking!'.
Still, once it was warmed up it settled down nicely and has a steady tick-over. Oil pressure light went out whilst cranking so hopefully that is a good sign.
Tomorrow I hope to be able to take it for a short drive to see how it goes. I need to tidy up the inside first - it's full of tools, parts, wheels etc.
Turbo/exhaust pipe support bracket still to be extended, engine cover to modify, dipstick to re-mark and I am sure there will be many more little bits to do, too.
