it is a straight swap.and you should want one.
just to explain how to alter the intermittent wipe.turn wipers on then off again.count the seconds delay you want between wipes.then turn wiper on again.there you have it....
If its just a streight swap, why wouldn't you not want one?

???? no. 9, no. 19 (312-995-531A) or no. 99 ????
I thought no. 19 (312-995-531A) was preset intermittent, no. 99 was variable intermittent.
Jed says no. 9 is intermittent and no. 19 is variable intermittent.
gus says no. 99 is variable intermittent.
Now I'm totally confused.
But it's a new year... and I confuse easily anyway.

19 standard fare
honest !
usually find 99 on higher spec golf
mk2 on and similar sized vw, relays
fitted to audis don't work.

Does anyone know what the part number is for no. 99 relay?
As soon as I know the part number I'll put it in what's below to be add this to Wiki:
No. 19 relay (part number 312-995-531A) is pre set intermittent relay. (out of old golf or whatever)
No. 99 relay (part number ???-???-???) is variable relay. (out of higher spec golf mk2 on and similar sized vw, relays fitted to audis don't work)
To set intermittent wipe time, turn wipers on then off again. Count the seconds for the delay you want between wipes and turn wipers on again. The variable delay is now set.
I don't have software or know how to E D I T/add to Wiki.
E D I T: figure it out. Could someone add the no. 99 part number please... or post it and I'll add it.

Cheers guys, the penny has finally dropped; thanks for putting up with me!
Now I've an excuse to go to the scrappy

(though having said that a new one from the dealer's probubly far easyer and can't be that expencive can it? you never know with VW)

well we've sold quite a few at £7 on
other forums, bet they must be £20 or so.

Whenever I move the stalk to the "down" position I just get normal wipers.
However, just noticed that I followed the wiring diagram that horace83 did.
I notice that there's another wiring diagram on the wiki which is slightly different by keith & Sylvia. I'll try the setup they have & try again.
I have non-blade style fuses, but I don't suppose it can hurt to try the alternative diagram. Can it?...
My van's an early one and i got mine to work ok but used a wiring diagram from somewhere else (can't remember where) so persevere and you should be able to get it going.

Hi Shepster,
Funnily enough, before I tried the other wiring setup from the wiki, I tested my wipers again.
When I drop the switch to the down position, the wipers wipe regularly for 3 wipes then settle on intermittent...
Tried it several times & it seems to do this every time.
I have no idea if it's simply a dodgy relay, but everything else works fine & I do have intermittent now, so I'll stick with horace83's setup. I'd rather cut as few wires as possible

we had a few stocked up but recently
we're too busy to hit all the local scrappies
so i only have my 1 spare left.

Something might be triggering the screen wash cycle momenteraly when you move the switch to intermitant. If you tap the screen washer it'll run the wipers for afew strokes regardless of what position the switch is in before returning to whatever the switch is set to. Probubly switch or relay, might be worth swaping the latter with one known to be good, sure someone would lend you one at a meet. If its the switch its probubly best to live with it, unless your like me and can't quite live with something that works alright, when it could be perfect

Usally gets worse before you finally make it better.

Well, found myself passing a random auto breaker this afternoon so thought I'd have a look. At the bottem of the stack was an early K reg Mk3 Golf CL. Looked in the relay pannel below the steering wheel and there it was, relay "99" - Mine for the sum of £1, bargin!
Swapped it with relay "19" in my fusebox and I now have varieable intermitant wipers! What a toy.
Looks like these things can be found in polos, passats and of course golfs from the mid 80's to late 90's. The later the car I suspect the lower the spec it needs to be as in golf mk3 form, the humble CL still has them - worth a look next time you see one! Still loads of mk3s in yards.
