I'm all ready to go with my new timing gun. I figured something was wrong with my timing marks as the manual timing setpoint didn't work for me at all but I ran no problem when I went back to my pre-rebuild dizzy orientation and fine-tuned by rotating and listening to the revs. Anyway, now that I have my new gun I thought I would do the timing properly but when I looked at Paul pulley photos I twigged something was wrong. The pulley on my engine is from my old early DG as it's in better shape than the one I got from the doner DG engine which is the one I used the crank and case from. See below for both photos. As you can see the timing Vee mark is after the TDC mark on my old pulley and before the TDC mark on the doner engine.

Any advice what I should do here? I'm thinking I should clean up and switch out the pulleys and do the timing using the doner pulley as it may be matched to the crank.

It's up to you but a pulley is a pulley.

I suspect you have a DF pulley on that engine, they are timed to 5 degrees ATDC http://vwt3.com/t3-tech/t3-data/engine- ... 3-1-9l-df/

Have a look here too https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Pe ... 1.9_Timing and read the DH section after DG.

You could simply make a tippex mark for 5 degrees BTDC and be done - 7mm from TDC as stated in the wiki, or take your own measurement

Hacksaw and make a new mark.
you can work out 5 degrees by the circumference divided by 72
I think its 7.5mm from memory.
as said one is a DF the other a DG.
