Well I met up with Kit, had a crawl underneath. The only thing that was suspect was the play and noise in the read driveshafts - felt kinda dry on side to side movement.
But you might think if was them they would make "the" noise all the time...
SO we took it for a 30 mile round trip test drive down the A3, absolutely nothing, not a sound, just a smooth 2.1... So I never go to actually here the noise!
Went into Grant at Jack's yesterday morning. He was apparently convinced it was the CV's. Which kind of makes sense, perhaps they only start making the noise after a longish run when the grease is fully heated and has changed viscosity thus allowing them to knock...? Last I heard All 4 CV's to be replaced on the rear....

Jake suspected right... 4 new CV joints (rear) seems to have done the trick. Sorry to confuse things, in my original post (I've just re-read it) I said I'd had them replaced, my mistake it was the wheel bearings that were replaced recently (Matt did say never rule anything out).
It also sorted a long running problem I've had for ages: a clunking knocking noise when I changed gear (1st/2nd) and the van would kangeroo, but with a bit of careful clutch control I could keep it under control. The new joints have tightened everything back up again and no more clunking.
Incidently, I also had a new clutch slave cylinder fitted cos it was leaking badly, so I've got nice smooth gear changes never experienced before!
I did fear the worst (gear box/engine) so I think I panicked on the motorway and wasn't in fact losing power, I just didn't want to push it.
So good news really.
Whilst we were under there we noticed a oil leak from the rear main oil seal but probably won't get this done until the clutch goes???
And next on the list is to get my rear diff working again (Jake to advise me on this... thanks Jake)
I'm off to give a proper run just to double check!
Cheers, Chris

S'okay Kit, we're used to bum steers, hence the wise one (Matt
) saying never rule anything out...
3rd gear, flat road, drop throttle and re-apply immediately, if it knocks it's pretty sure to be rear CVJs. If it 'rings' maybe propshaft UJs. But I can't see how yours would be knocking under power going uphill unless you were dropping the throttle and re-applying, they don't do that when under constant load, unless they're absolutely shot to smithereens...
A classic case was the (in)famous Terrvanman 'vanagon syndrome' thread on ezBoard - think it still holds the record for number of posts on a Syncro topic - Jack's had told Terry they'd checked and discounted the lambda sensor - what was it?
The lambda sensor - Ha, ha!
But that's an MV engine, an anomaly in itself
