So, I drained off some.fuel, clean as a whistle, the tank looks quite new. Fuel filter looked good too but put a new one on anyway.
Checked all pipework on the vacuum system, couldn't see any problems.
Sprayed some cleaner down the carb and put a new air filter in.
Checked all the plugs, looked ok, a bit on the sooty side maybe.
Started it up, noticeably better straight away. Went for a run in it and it was as good as new, pulled well in all gears even up hill. Try it again tomorrow but looking good.
Could it have just been gunk in the carb after being sat over the winter?

Thanks all for your input, appreciated :ok

Just before she backfired was there any hesitation? If so, it could possibly be the start of the hall sender on the distributor failing, however, definitely worth checking your timing and the vacuum hose from dizzy to carb as these are easy fixes.

Other possibility could be a failing coil - have a feel of it after a 30 minute run - if it's hot to touch again it's potentially on its way out. The symptoms usually point to no acceleration mid throttle, but power at only start of throttle and then full throttle.

Thanks. The engine kind of misfired quite badly causing it to judder. Taking it for a good run tomorrow so I'll check the coil.

So ventured out in it a few times today and it's running well. Panic over. At least I've learnt a bit about my van. Thanks again for the input.

So after a week of using the van regularly with no issues we headed off into Wales again.... virtually on the same stretch of road it died.... on a hill.... halfway round a bend

Managed to start it again and get to our destination but only by keeping it in the top end of the rev range.

Or fuel hose replacement and clean out carb time!

Sounds like it's possibly fuel hose degrading from inside due to ethanol in modern petrol. It can look ok from the outside, and still be knackered. As it's after the filter, particles can make it to the carb, even getting past the integral cone filter on the inlet, and eventually into the jets.

Thanks, i'll look at that. Would it not be bad all the time though? it seems to run ok after its been left a while, just doesn't like driving for more than 2hrs.

It drove 100 miles on the way there perfectly fine, then we stayed 5 days. When we left it ran ok for 20 miles, then buggered up, then after doing most of the journey at high'ish revs it seemed to sort itself out.
