Hello

I detected the noise to that cylinder using a mechanical stethoscope
i have not measured the others but they had very slight gap/ just touching.
No adjustments have been made as yet, because I thought it was a lot of
Clearance and coupled with the fact apart from oil plugs etc, haven't a
Great knowledge of this engine therefore would seek advice before diving in.

Thanks Neil

you can buy a USB enoscope off ebay for under a tenner, would tell you if the tappet has collapsed of the end of the pushrod is damaged.

I hope you are not driving it?

Suggests they're hydraulic, yet...

That suggests they're (adjusted as) solids.

Let us know when you've had a chance to check/confirm. Makes a huge difference to the answers you'll receive.

endoscope picture will tells us.
Also worth removing the rocker shaft and pulling out a few pushrods and photograph/ measure it, I think solid tappet pushrods are different length, not 100% somebody will confirm.
this will give you a better view of tappets with endoscope.

don't just look at the suspect one look at a few.

mmm cheese and pickle :D

Hello

Endoscope turned up today unfortunately it's for
a android phone mines a iphone. Needs different
adapter.. will get Monday.
I have noticed that a sticker the same as on itchyfeet
thread on solid or hydraulic tappet is on my rocker
Cover next to a spark plug sticker.
Does this mean my tappets are definitely hydraulic?
Thanks Neil

Not necessarily. They would have been originally, but If someone changed them for solids they may not have thought to remove the stickers.

Hello

Sorry for not getting back sooner but have
had man cold... and can't get to grips with
Getting a suitable endoscope (got wrong one)
I am just going to take push rod tube out
to get access to tappet, but was wondering
what keeps the tappet in place, is there a
circlip or something... this is the first time
I have worked on this engine.

Many thanks neil

The valve train keeps the tappet (lifter) in place.
They can be removed without engine dismantling, tricky but not impossible

Thanks Kev

I thought it was just a case of crushing
push rod tube and pulling out lifter.
Will have to do more research before
I tackle it I think.

Many thanks neil

first of all before crushing out a push rod tube, just remove pushrod and take a picture of the tappet, or a few of them and post up pics, it will tell us alot.

if you want or need to swap yes crush out pushrod tube after removing pushrod and hook out tappet, a cranked screwdriver works, to replace a telescopic tube is needed, scat big mouth are the cheapest, vw heratige do them.

Wouldn't a a magnetic pick up tool pull the lifter out through the tube? This worked on my air cooled engine.
