Looks quite straightforward to fit. I have to turn the key hard to the right to get the starter going. As the switch is band new I'm wondering if its the barrell itself that could be part of the problem

Went out a few hours later and wouldn't start again. Is there a way of bypassing the inhibitor to test whether its causing the problem

I went out in the dark and there must be current going to the inhibitor as I could see sparks as I moved the gear stick up and down. Should it spark like that?

Sparks? Sounds like you have a short somewhere. Check that all your power supply terminals are insulated properly or not almost touching one another or loose, etc.
I think I'm right in saying that a high current can jump across to another terminal if the insulation is poor?

You aren't having much luck with the van are you :(

Let's hope you can at at least this problem resolved :ok

I'm getting to the stage where I've had enough. Day one and throughout the the first year and a half were taken up with 5 engine failures. Then loads of running problems, in and out of garages turned out to be a split carb float but took a year to diagnose. I've done the rad twice almost every pipe so at last it dooesn't lose a drop of coolant. Then these frequent starting problems. I'm hoping the ATF leak is just a sump seal but I wouldn't bet on it and then this welding to sort. I never seem to get head of the game with this van. The guy before me was a bodger of the highest order but did enough for me not to spot the problem. I've been looking at the electrics and theyre a mess so I need to get my head round them. I'm getting it in the neck about the van and I cant blame her as we've ended up on a low loader so many times.

Ironically once these bits are sorted there's not much left to do and I have done nearly 6000 miles all over France over the last couple of years showing that its basically a decent van. If it was a keeper I wouldn't mind but the kids are 10 and 8 and as its a hi top its getting small.

I'm going to start a thread on the ignition electrics and gear selector as I know the starter works. Thanks for the advice every one.
