Re: gear lever snapped off

Post by Mocki »

yep, on my white camper , mine got snapped at a mot a few years ago, we repaired it and it was never a issue again after driving home with a big screwdriver as a stick poked down the remaining part ....
when i got my current van, the previous muppet had bent it into a very stoopid shape, took me a while to take it out and reshape it to something more like normal, and then i swapped it for another when i got the chance .....

There are few times i'd pick JustKampers over Brickwerks but they have the Genuine VW 5 speed RHD stick for £99.50: http://www.justkampers.com/catalog/prod ... 1983-1992/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

In a word, not possible ime. The spring plunger thing wont pass through the circular hole in the square plate cabside, which means undoing the 4 x M6 nuts under the floor and the change box will then drop down too, but that allows the plate, pivot and lever assembly to lift out.
Who the hell signed that design off at VW? Its a shocker.

I wondered why I couldn't find gears after doing a front to back linkage rebuild with quick shift...just found out an hour ago, exactly as described, crack where the collar dimple is. Can it be repaired and reinforced?

Thats where it goes, could be a sign you are forcing into gear too much, nearing rebuild perhaps !

Image
ImageImage the two photos of a hole are where the gear lever comes through the floor so it would be possible to pull the broken parts up through the hole after the lever was removed from the linkage,the pin is for the 'detent' for reverse,I looked at covkids photos and there were no 'O' rings showing on his,two of mine are broken one was ok,anyone know what they do or what they are for

Yes I have documented that before now, but only on the later 14mm gear lever. A forum search ahould find it.

Scottbott there should be a flat section rubber ring in that plunger groove, not several O rings.
Its job is to silence the "click" of the detent ball, nothing more.

finished the van today and just thought I would take it out for a spin to make sure everything was ok and it ground out on a sleeping policeman,never done that before so drove home gingerly and had a look,I reckon I have put the LPG tank brackets on 180 degrees out,I thought the tank looked low but never gave it another thought,better go out tomorrow and turn the brackets round the correct way,also did not fit the spare wheel carrier until last, bad move as it will not fit at the back as the tank prevents it,tried cutting bits out but will have to have another think about it as I do not want to drop the tank and undo the gas fittings again,nothing is ever straight forward!,the gear lever extension will not fit the new lever as well, it should but will not so the 'shift' feels strange as it is a long time since I used the standard length lever,it feels practically on the floor,but the gear change is nice and precise
