I'm a little confused though because both the rack mounts AND tie rods seem absolutely fine.

You won't find fault with a tie off the vehicle unless its really bad. The rack bushes and supposed to have some movement, i suspect your tester is not familar with t3's. Change your steering bushes to the ones simon sells, they have no give so make steering feel better, there also easier to fit.

yes, but you did take it to a VW MAIN DEALER, they work on NEW audis and will fail you for looking different to their normal "company car" contract work.

It has major advantages to a normal MOT station.... They're free. My mate works there! I think it should have been an advisory but i guess they take no chances with steering components. If it needs doing its done, thats my attitude.

I'm going to fit the new bushes tommorrow at work in the press.

The tie rods didnt arrive today at GSF so i'll grab them tommorrow and hopefully it'll all be sorted by Saturday.

I had exactly the same fail last year...

And like you I found no play in the componants, changed them anyway and it was no better for all the hassle.

I don't think they can get their heads around the fact that a big steering wheel equals more movement....
