That coolant sensor isnt T3 and Scotchloks are never a good sign.
Do the wiring colours trace through?

Spot on!! I know you're all dying to know... It appears I have fixed my issues! I'm not counting my chickens just yet but I think it was a dodgy connection coming from the temp one sensor in the airflow meter.

Still having issues I'm afraid :(

To recap she still doesn't hold idle (she just stalls) until up to temperature, at which point you hear a little surge in the revs and then she holds.

After 3 senders we now have a working Temp II sensor (the others were throwing up strange readings).

Have fitted GoWesty AFM signal filter (which illiminates Vanagon Syndrome) and also renews all connections to the AFM.

To confuse issues I defintely have two ECUs and an additional temp sender by the coolant header tank, as well as an extra wire tapped into the AFM temp wire. I have no knowledge of this tampering by the PO. All I will say it's worked for the last 3 years.

Also worth noting is that some days (like this morning) she idles fine when cold, and others (like this afternoon, once cooled post morning run) she'll need the normal warming up.

This is driving me nuts!!!!

Its been well "interfered with".

Unless the PO can tell you the whys and wherefores of having two ecu's (madness) then it all wants removing and putting back to OEM specs, otherwise you dont know where to start or what to trust IMO.

Tell me about it. Haven't been able to make contact with the previous owner. And really don't want to open the can of worms that is ripping it all out just yet

I had the SA laid up for months and months because of a loom fault until I put my best fighting trousers on and got stuck in. Had to open up the loom sleeving under the floor to find a hidden bodge...

The horror!! I have to hold onto the fact she has been running fine for the last few years.

We have had a couple of very severe winters but not for a few years. Can't have been worse than those?

Cold start stalling

Post by danmetallic »

Ok!! I can touch wood say that it's fixed. Took the bracket off the idle stabilisation valve to give it a clean and the vacuum hose leading down to the engine just broke away. They were just being held together by the bracket. All replaced and the last two days start ups have been fine and dandy. Re soldering all the earths certainly didn't do any harm either. So basically a vacuum leak.

Strictly speaking its an air delivery pipe, so you had a massive air leak making the mixture go lean. Glad its sorted, you should see an improvement in mpg too :)
