I'm happy with it... Dokas are draggier than van's anyway. Will easily cruise at 70 on the flat.

Hi! I don't know anything about engines so bear with me (and help me out if you can) -
I am needing to replace the engine in my '87 T25. It was originally 1.6 Petrol but has had a 1.7 turbo diesel put in about 6 years ago (long before we got it) which broke last week. I'm now trying to find another turbo diesel to fit in it, and the mechanic told me a 1.9 TD would be a fantastic engine - but wouldn't fit under the engine lid! Now I've had a look at it and it looks like someone has cut a hole in the lid and effectively made about 2 inches more space over the engine, presumably to make the current engine fit. Now, will this be enough extra space to make a 1.9 TD fit or not? If yes, I'll start hunting for one now...

An aaz engine which is the one you are after will fit under the original engine lid with only slight modification. No need for a 2 inch extention thing.

Yes, as MacW says, should fit with that extra 2" - its the injection pump that protrudes, those for the T25 had the boost control capsule (aneroid) mounted on the side not the top of the pump.
There is no problem with the single or doublecab pickups, heightwise. The 1.9TD AAZ engines are excellent - but go for one with a fully manual pump or make sure you get all the electrical bits that go with it otherwise.

There is a quite a lot of guff in Alt engines on the various ways of configuring the manifolds and turbo choices. T25 JX configuration is possibly the easiest, using the original exhaust manifold and JX turbo, but as you haven't got one, best to read up these threads first...

I'm finally satisfied with my AAZ conversion. Found the whole job a little frustrating and a lot more time consuming than I expected. The van is my only transport so was under pressure to get the job done! Engine is a lot smoother than the JX and pulls really well at all speeds. As has been said before this is the engine that VW should have fitted. Will cruise all day at 120kph.
Harry, mine also runs better in cool conditions and wondering if this is a air intake problem? In fact its about the only thing I'm not satisfied with. The original JX system was plumbed in up the rear pillar and got nice cool air from the air vent. I cannot see a way of doing that with what I have at the moment. Don't really want to take the intercooler route but looking for a filter housing that will fit behind the lamp and pipe into the original intake.
