Is it possible mine was therefore always a DF engined van with later cooling set-up, all like that from new and straight from the factory?

I really need to check the timing marks tomorrow to be sure what I have - your link does show timing differences as you said, when comparing DG and DF engines - it will eat my soul not knowing what the existing set-up is..!!

I feel like I'm sifting through clues of old crimes and living an episode of Cold Case, or Waking the Dead...!! :rollin
In fact, thinking more on that, I'm considering changing the name of my van to `Boyd` or `Eve` :rofl

If it's a DF I think Trigger would be a better name :D

DG pulley below with v notch to the right (BeforeTDC) of TDC U notch, DF would have v notch to the left (AfterTDC) of U notch.

Good morning...

Just had a quick look, and it looks like the timing is set for BTDC as per DG.

Would I be right in assuming then, that it's a DG engine, with DF carb and Distributor?

Trigger!? - that made me chuckle...!!! :rollin

My van seems more confused than the bearded lady on XFactor..!!
Perhaps I should have maybe named it Conchita..!? :rofl

Pulleys can be swapped too that looks like a dg pulley.

thinking about it head should have an 025... part number cast in, what is it?

If it's a dg then look for a carb and dizzy to enjoy the increased power, if it's a df then need to set timing using an adjustable gun from tdc mark.

always possible the engine has dg heads on a df block or the other way but start with lookjng at the heads

I can see the manifold part code of 025 129 713, without an A on the end.
Can't find the head part code stamp though.

Where should I be looking?

E D I T: I think I found it on the head under more dirt - it looks like 025101375. There seems to be something after that, but can't tell what it is, it looks like a C but I'm not 100%

( First VW I have owned, and never even attempted maintenance on a vehicle before owning this van - so a complete novice  )

Ok, that link makes sense with what I see on mine - both heads have 025101375C stamped on them.

So it looks like DG heads and DF manifold and carb.

Are there any differences with the rest of the engine to look for or know about?
e.g. engine block and internal mechanics - is there another externally evident aspect to a DF engine block to distinguish from a DG one?

It is good to know how the van is put together, so that when issues arise, much of the investigation work is complete when trying to source parts.

Appreciate your time on this Itchyfeet. This is all so much easier to learn when talking to others who have been there and done it.

Yes DG and DF used different cams.

Yes DG and DF used different cams.

I see - but nothing externally visible to tell them apart?
( Baring in mind the engine number just shows as refurbed in 2002. )

No the crankcase is the same.
You may have had a DF engine originally and the engine was replaced with a DG and the carb and distributor from the DF transferred to the new engine.
DF engines normally only had single speed cooling fans and a thinner radiator. If you look at the radiator fan switch if it has two wires then it was most likely a DF engine.

it could also be that in 2002 VW reconditioned DF engines with DG heads because DF heads were no longer in production but coupled with the timing pulley I'd say DG

Get a Pierburg 2e3 and a DG dizzy and if it perks up alot it's a DG

And the manifold and air filter etc - would I need to change that too?

Yes sorry, you would need the Pierburg manufold and pancake air trunking, not sure about throttle linkage or air filter box but somebody will know.

It's a lot of bits but IMO it would be worth it.
