cooling issue, or rather not cooling

If I'm understanding your question correctly - I think that would indicate that the system was working correctly.

The 'cap' maintains the system at 1 bar pressure by releasing some coolant back into the 'cold tank' as the coolant heats and expands and the pressure in the system rises.
Then when the engine is off and the coolant cools, the system 'sucks' coolant back in as the pressure reduces to maintain the system in a 'full' state

Okay update is that all seemed good after replacing thermostat, rad switch, header tank, its cap and sensor.
So I fitted a split charge relay and bought a leisure battery too.

However I've now noticed a little coolant from the lower central cowl for the heater vents near the foot pedals.
I suspect heater matrix leak of some sort. Any ideas?
Off to Glastonbury on Wednesday and have no time left for faffing do planning on going for it but still very apprehensive about whether I should.

What causes coolant to leak from there? I'm not really sure.
How severe could the leak be? How could it worsen and what would cause it?
What should I look out for if driving for 5 hours?
I need advice please peeps and lots of reassurance if realistic.
I can't not got to Glastonbury in my van.
Is it worth the risk?
And would using RadWeld help at all?

I've never heard good things coming from Radweld.

There's talk above about the pressure increase when the water system is hot. However if there is air in the wrong place and it gets hot it expands significantly more than a fluid. I had a similar is sure to the one you describe. I spent £100s at a reputable specialist and they refitted everything and didn't solve the issue.

Through a process of elimination (as Kev says) I found that the vent on the top of thermostat bonnet was blocked. I replaced this and went through the venting process in full (again) and haven't had an issue since.
