IME it's not uncommon for the D+ terminal to have been tampered with on campers to add split charge circuits. If it's being held low by such a circuit it would cause the above symptoms I think ? I might be interesting to lift the D+ terminal off the alt and measure the resistance to earth..

Thanks so much for everyone's comments and help. I tried to restart the van yesterday to check the voltage but unfortunately there was no power in the battery. :( a good indication that the battery wasn't being charged as I'd done about 20 miles of motorway the day before which should have provided ample charging.

I'm currently charging the battery to try again and have also ordered a replacement alternator from Stevens vw spares. Any one had dealings with them before.
