Mine will chug a cough, and cut out after a short time with the AFM disconnected. Seems to have a huge impact on running ability I'd say. Make sure there are no air leaks around the intake to the throttle body too.

PS agreed, I don't think a faulty temp 2 sender would make it cut out or grumble at idle

When was the fuel filter last replaced?..I had a similar problem on a fuel injected [2ltr air cooled] typ2 van.

Believe it or not, the filter on dj/mv fuel injection is claimed to last a lifetime by VW! I'm guessing they didn't expect that to mean over 25 years. I'd change it if unknown, but it probably won't be the problem at hand.

The metal filter by the pump, about the size of a coke can? I can usually tell if its goosed if the pump starts buzzing or whining, even audible from inside. Mine last about 2 years :-\

To explain..mine would be ok then only run at tick over,leave it for 1/2hour then ok for 100miles or so,i tried sensors etc,then replaced the filter..ok for the rest of Australia! then just as we were going to sell the van the problem returned [cack in the fuel tank?]
