plastic housing as on the pic posted ^^ where it says rhermostat housing
cut in as in cooling system is not an early it looks late and a pipe from the early pump/ thermostat housing looks blannked off.

Ok so you can clearly see the plastic late thermostat housing on the left of this photo and I bet it has the guage sensor and thermoswitch fitted, hence why the guage works.
question is why did somebody fit an old thermostat housing?
also is there two thermostats, need to open the rear housing to check, you don't really want two
if it were mine I woold fit the correct pump and metal pipe but it will cost you over £100

I'm in soton, happy to have a look if you bring it over sometime.
need to look for the second oil pressure switch under the water pump, this will tell you if its an early engine fitted or just an early pump/thermostat housing
that early housing is worth money as they are obsolete so can be sold to offset cosf of putting it back to standard

Just checked and yes plastic housing with red yellow wire going in to rear. Well I have the other type of water pump handy already... I didn't send it back. And there is thermostat in the metal housing, and presumably the plastic housing.

And there is second switch because it is winding me up with buzzer at the moment, have just got a new one of them of just kampers I need to fit.
Shame to change it after all the effort last month to fit new pump!

so does two oil switched mean a newer engine?
Also It must have been modified years ago because the pump seal had gone and looked fairly old which is why I had to replace it

With a few exceptions and changeover two oil switches is late engine
you definately have some early cooling system stuff on there, not only the pump and thermostat housing but metal pipe by carb and what looks like a very very old expansion tank with a metal cap
the system is designed to flow as its been cut about you could end up with poor flow around the engine which can cause local overheating.
any way one thing at a time, You now know guage is ok.
you need to sort the buzzer but that could also be a bad connection and nothing wrong with the switch, assuming you definately have one, its common if not to ground the wire to stop the buzzer, if this grounding fails the buzzer goes off.
also need to open that plastic thermostat housing and see if there is a thermostat, I bet there is or it would not seal properly which means you have two, if it were mine I'd be putting it back to how it should be.

Defiantly has a high pressure oil switch, and if I take the connector and ground it on spade next to distribiter red thingy the buzzer is silent. Im sure that its either the switch needs replacing or just needs cleaning up as dirty. But because I cant get to clean it without working my way in there I thougn I might as well change it. The buzzer only started sounding after I fiddled with it when changing pump because bearing seal went. And the buzzer has no pattern of when it goes of which suggests earth is loose.
Ill fit it and hope.
I will get into plastic housing and check but need to change rad at same time (which is ready and waiting) because I cant bleed system because screws broke.
I ordered rad knowing that next time I fiddle with collant system Ill have to do it.

No engine is virtualy the same early to late, its some of the pipework that's been changed from an early for some strange reason.
