Thought I'd give everyone an update and close off this thread, now that I've got my van back from the garage and it's working well (touch wood)

So as previously mentioned I had the carburettor sent off to VW Bromyard for a full refurb. It took about 6 weeks, but came back looking and performing brand new again. Well worth the money.

Whilst it was away getting repaired I also splashed out and had the garage fit a new stainless steel exhaust system from JK. It was a real pain getting the old rusty one off, 7 of the studs snapped off even after a weeks soaking. They managed to bore them out without dropping the engine, which saves some time and money.

Once all parts back on, final tune up and now the van works like a dream, very pleased! :D

Thanks for the update.
Pretty sure Bromyard give you a fault report or fix report.
Do you have it?

Bad news.

The van ran okay for 2 weeks but started it this morning, left it running for 20 mins to warm up. Reversed off if the drive then engine stalled. Now same issue as previous, cuts out on idle so have to keep the revs up!

Does this mean I just spent all that money on a refurb carb for no reason! :evil:

Not a waste no, since few owners get the chance to have their carbs properly tested. Have you tried increasing the choke just a little? Does it die at idle when engine is completely warmed up? If it does, you probably have a minor air leak on a hose or elsewhere.

I mention this since over the Winter I've had no probs with idle whatsoever but like a few others, this week it can cut out soon after starting until engine is really warm. I put this down to the warming of the weather, changes in atmospheric pressure so the choke is probably coming off slightly earlier than it should. A slight adjustment should sort that.
