I'd imagine they're popular mainly for the vibrations.

The only thing that makes me hesitate with diesel is the noise, my ears are a bit fragile from my rock and roll days. But I'm assuming tdi with changed ratios = engine just ticking over. And I wanna bulkhead.

Other news, van started on the key today, maybe I can keep it struggling on for a few more weeks to give me time to find out about engines. In to local diesel guy on Friday for assessment, hopefully he can take the pressure off this forum for a bit.

Try this mate. Starts OK from cold so no problem there. When its hot and you`ve left it half an hour or so, and you have the starting problem, if you look at the water pipe housing on the rear of the cylinder head (clutch end), where the small bore rubber pipe comes off and runs up to the front, the blue/white wire that connects to that small brass sender, disconnect the wire, it just pulls off the spade terminal, and fasten it out of the way so it can`t touch metal. Jump back in and your glow plug light should now glow when you turn the ignition on. Count to 10 seconds slowly (1000,2000,3000 etc) and then go for a start. See if this helps your start problem. It cannot do any harm, but I have an inkling that it may work for you.

All this wire does is stop the glowplugs from kicking in when the motor is warm, as VW decided it shouldn`t need them. Peugeot/Citroen think differently with their TD motors, I know from experience that they needed glow to start when warm. Something to do with indirect injection and turbos, the non-turbo Pe/Ci diesel didn`t need it when warm
