stilsons everytime owd duck

Have to say, despite having a set of Irwins, they're unused as yet, and the Stilsons often come out.. just ametter of finding elbow room to get them locked onto the job. 2 diffeernt sizes helps, small Stilosn very handy too

i may be stating the silly here, BUT, you did have the engine up to working temp when you tried to get it undone didnt you?

Ally sump, steel plug, ally expands quicker than steel, it maybe not as tight as you think...

welding a nut on will have a simular effect if you leave it to cool after before trying to undo it,

A big thankyou to all the posters who have given advice. :D

It was the Irwin socket that did the business, tried stilsons but couldn't get 'em on the bolt.

I replaced the bolt with a new one from VW (T4 I believe, the thread is the same size, bolt's just a wee bit longer) as the old was buggered.

I now have lovely new oil sat in my engine and I'm feeling rather smug.

Thanks once again

Gneeral good DIY/ iron mongers store seems to be the place.

You know, where you have a job getting in the door and its like an Aladdin's cave once your in, with all sorts of strange things bashing you t'head as you walk up and down looking for stuff.. i.e. the best sort of old fashioned iron mongers where they have things in bulk instead of all pr-packed in 5's when you need six off :(

That's the one, will always have a set of Irwin bolt extractors, its just finding them... usually staring your right in the face! Blue box in a sexy vac pack - Irwin rapidly replacing Stanley tools as Brits seem to be totally confused about relaible supply and marketing these days (bloody middlemen), Irwin not that cheap eivver :!: But good and hanging up ona hook near you...

Bendyknees wrote:If all fails i use these. I have a complete set now near enough, have never failed to remove anything ive put them on. And as a bonus they are pretty cheap too! Your local machine mart an halfords stock them usually as well.

Looks like a useful tool there, not seen those before. Will be adding to the large box of stuff labeled "just in case" :)
