Thanks ghost,

There is a spark at the plugs, just checked that.

I had a new fuel pump six months ago and it was ok before I buggered about with it

Right, that's very good then.

Are you still getting any backfiring ?

If "yes" then it almost certain you have the leads in wrong positions on the dizzy.

Note that some folk have their dizzy 180 degrees (half a full turn) "out". They will run just fine like this but the leads have to be moved correspondingly. It may be that yours is like that but you are putting the leads on in the "right" places when they need to be 180 degrees "out" (hope your following this).

When I was learning (many many years ago !) I had just this on a Vauxhall. It had me going for hours and hours until I figured out the dizzy was 180 degrees out

Double check you have fuel squirting out of the feed to the carb when cranking (but don't blow yourself up !! - Wet towel / fire extinguisher to hand when doing stuff like that !!)

Thanks ghost,

Right,

I've got the van to start but runs like a bag of spanners and backfires.

I've tried the leads on 180 degrees about and just the same

Well if it runs at all with the leads swapped both "correct" and 180 degrees out, that proves beyond any doubt that you have the leads on incorrectly.

Back in a moment...

Read Itchy's post in that link and get your HT leads in the right holes on the cap.
Check the firing order (=1432) Check you know which cylinders are which "number" = see HERE in the wiki.

That is your problem for sure :ok

A clue in this pic of an engine with the dizzy 180 degrees out (from the wiki again ;))

I've tried all the above and still no luck.
If it does start it takes ages and have to keep foot full on the gas. It won't rev at all.

I give in for today cos I'm wet, cold and seriously fed up.

I just can't think of what else to try.

I've tried the HT LEADS in all positions and still no good.

I've even replaced all the old spark plugs.

I should have left the bloody thing alone.

Well, when you do feel like tackling it again, go back to basics, find TDC and set dizzy up for plug 1 and go from there.

I bet when you go back to it refreshed you will spot the error straight away.

I've just looked at the WIKI again and read this

Firing order 1 - 4 - 3 - 2
Number one is the front right cylinder, when viewed from the rear.

Does this mean the cylinder closest to the gearbox is number 1 or the one closest to the bumper?

The diagram shows the cylinder closest to the gearbox is number 1

1 is rhs by the gearbox as you stand and look at the engine
diagram in wiki is quite clear i think, trans = gearbox

Thanks,

I was just making sure. I realised trans=gearbox but the text in the what to check if your vehicle won't start says as I put above. (Number one cylinder is front right)

I'm just at the end of my tether with the damn thing and trying to check and recheck everything.

I wasn't doubting the WIKI but myself

Hello

I found on mine that i could rotate the Distributor Cap a few mm left and right and it would make a difference of start or no start. Just an idea
