When I did my gudgeon pins (a good few years ago now) I used a small towel, heated up with boiling water, then rung out and wrapped it around the piston. The gudgeon pins came out quite easily by hand then. On re-fitting I put the pins in the freezer for an hour. I did remove the pistons from the liners as I wished to glaze bust (I did that by hand).
