Could try that, there's a few knocking a round but generally squiffy and hard to read. Will try the odd page then... its an SAE paper so shouldn't really be publicised but I'll check situation.

Hi All

Did I read that right?

Up Focus today & thought I'd check the VC.

Warm from drive round town.

Put in crawler, full-lock & just let in go on tick-over.

Round we went, but could hear tyres grabbing

Is this a good un?

I'll give mine a go when its back on the road. bit of stick/slip at full lock seems to be the norm from most people.

how bout something like this mounted in the vc housing

How often does one use full lock on tarmac? Yes, sometimes, getting out of a tight spot etc, but as I said earlier I believe the very tight lock on the Syncro (for a 4WD) is responsible for some of this 'scrubbing' that worries some so much.

If after a run when everything is quite hot, the engine tends to stall when on full or nearly full lock, and lots of power is needed to force it around, irrespective of scrubbing, then maybe thats the time to start thinking about the VC being tight and doing some 4x2 and kerb rollup tests. Scrubbing, per se, is not the criterion.

Aftewr a long run, mine deffo wants to STOP the forward progress on anything approaching full lock.. not on full lock.. but a fairly tight turn.. thats on road tyres on hot tarmac etc... even a slight "chirp" on full lock

Been running it without prop in..

It didnt seem at all bad on the "Guyanes" on a cool autumn eve..after a bit of greenlaning. but they squirm about and flex releasing the loadings..

right, drove mine from work to home mostly motorway at 60 plus for 20 miles then did a full lockturn on tarmac in first. Wheels Squeeeeeeeel but no judder or "scrubbing" managed it in first without the van wanting to stop (yokahama 195 R14C in case that makes a difference, a shade narrower than stock tyres) In the morning a cold VC straight in to full lock wheels will scrub and slip (slightly graveled surface)need to put it in G (as going up a slight hill) and take it very gently, 1st would need to be pushed more than I'd like to at that time in the morning.

The way I understand it is..
tyres "sqealing" is more an alignment issue etc.. (tight turns will never be in full alignment in any case) if it doesnt try and "stop" ie really slow down... then the VC is prob good.. its when, like mine, that the concerns happen.. physically trying to stop as all the forces act against each other.. and nothing gives....

Locked
