Will WIKI it when I get a chance Pionte. I had noticed an absence of wheel bearing WIKI. Did mine at the weekend when I changed discs although to be honest, they were fine.

:ok

I have a general rule of thumb, if I didnt fit something, and cant be certain when it was done, if the cost is less than the hassle/time to redo it then I replace rather than refit... but I totally get that others prefer not to change wear and tear items untill they have to. I have done this in the past especially if im selling a vehicle on, but if its a keeper then I take a longer term view.

I sure don't with clutches though. If I were fitting them for customers they'd get the whole kit but on mine I inspect the clutch and replace what needs replacing. Generally I'll fit a complete clutch then the next time just the friction plate and so on. Not been caught out once in 30 years. Old school mechanics assess and address. Fitters just fit.

Hi Bigherb - this topic just got very, well, topical for me as I'm sitting waiting for UPS to deliver new discs, bearings etc. Can I ask what type of sealant you use for this job?

Many thanks

Pionte

I'm just about to launch in on this job (once my bits arrive and it stops raining anyway). We have an '85 DG and I had the nearside wheel off at the weekend to see what type of calipers we have. I'll put this the only way I can: your hub has studs - ours has holes and we use what I think of as "standard" wheel bolts (I don't believe the rears are like that).

How come they are different? I'm guessing maybe you have alloys or something..?

Sorry if a) it's a daft question and b) it's been asked before.

Thanks,
Chris

I use a polyurethane sealer.

Hi Chris, I have only just seen this... you are correct, I do indeed have alloy wheels. The studs make it so much easier to get the heels on , and allow the use of wheel spacers to correct the offset of the wheels. I hope you got yours done all ok.

Old post but very much appreciated, never done taper wheel bearings before and now the van is... Slightly less noisy than before. But the bearings are now good. Thank you!
