i tried various websites to resize photos to make a profile pic, all end up 'too large' any tips?

Usually, the easiest is to use something like Photoshop, Gimp or another photo-editor. Resize the picture there to exact fit and then upload the avatar directly.

i use paint which is in every computer. Just paste your pic in there, go click on "select all" and in option there is a "stretch and skrew", resize using percentage (keeping proportion). Save picture and look if it's under 144k (test and try until you get to that size) that's the max u can upload i think. let me know if this help.
