Have you tried taking the lscu (no 43) out and seeing if still a problem?

If it still happens with this out then the problem is either the temp sensor , the dash , or the wiring between them.

Just thought Id update this thread in-case anyone else has a similar problem to me.

I replaced the wire from the water temperature sensor in the engine bay to the dash with a new one. Routing it as close to the original loom as possible (although went round the petrol tank instead of over it to avoid having to drop it ).

Since then I have been 2000km + on a trip to france and no sign of the problem recurring with the temperature gauge sitting just to the left of the middle even in 30+ degree celsius heat. Previously it would definitely have occurred even before I got to the ferry.

So looks like it was the wiring in my case...
