California Dreamin wrote:It could be one of many things....poor feed wire/spade terminal on the solenoid, the wire often internally corrodes.
Bad earth/pos lead wires....earth on the gearbox nose is prone.
or perhaps the copper braided wire that goes between the solenoid and starter body has corroded to dust (VERY COMMON)
Maybe a burnt out section on the armature or worn out brushes.
Solenoid contacts

First step if this was me would be to run a tempary second signal wire from the ignition switch to the stater solenoid to try and prove the connection between the switch and the solenoid is either good ( still won't start, same symptoms) or at fault ( starts )

I started at the easiest points with a view to preventing the removal of the diff-lock actuator and CV joint to get at the suitably buried starter motor. A better inspection of the battery terminals revealed an alarming deterioration of the various protective sleeves on the joining wires and once they were changed the fan fired up consecutively 13 times (had to make it to lucky 13).

So, I'm going to risk going out to work now and hope that was the true cause of it all!

Thanks for the help guys :ok
