My brother is a VW mechanic who has worked in our VW dealership for years and has worked on many VW 1.6d's, in Golfs, Polos etc but never in T3's as these wagons are basically non existent in our parts However I just texed him about this and I was curious myself. He informed me that it is possible to "turn up" the injector pump to provide the engine with more diesel resulting in more power. Improvement in top speed would be little if any however your acceleration should be improved marginally. I am open to opinions on this.

No, not yet. Im still waiting on the dealer in Germany to get it. Im waiting nearly two weeks now However from the description he gave me i can tell you that it is a 1.7d, 5speed, New HU/TUV, 103K KM and supposedly in great condition. Fingers crossed.

Find a 1y or similar, or the Gti cnversion, sisnce you already have the required "parts".
I can't comment on a GTI conversion as i have never done one. I have done a 1Y conversion though.
As i said previously, stick with the 1.6d and enjoy the MPG. The 1Y won't get you the same MPG and the power increase isn't worth the hassle IMHO (very small power increase i thought - quite disappointing).
Now if your engine goes pop, that's a different question - the 1Y is an excellent replacement.
I found this link, it may be of use. http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php?topic=30340.0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
An update on the hunt. Last night I put money down on a 1987 T3. Ex German army with 59k km. And from the pictures............... I think i can safely say no rust!
Thanks for all the help

My Dad a diesel specialist of almost 50 years speaks very highly of the 1.7td that Vw used. He is always keeping his eyes open for one for recon to replace my 1.6

i'd just enjoy tootling along , mines a 1.9dg auto and it's not quick but it doesn't need to be , ive had bmw alpinas, twin turbo supra,s and all sorts in the past and I drove them all the same way , slow ! my mrs calls me pipe and slippers as has been said before just sit back and enjoy it, there's far too many people trying to get somewhere yesterday
I don't own a Diesel, but I have a question. Has anyone noticed any improvement in performance or economy from using the "Premium" (high cetane) Diesel fuels that are now around, such as Total Excellium, BP Ultimate and Esso Supreme ?
Not in a T25, but I have used them in my picasso 2.0HDi and in my LDV pilot camper in which I put a 1.9 XUD turbo from a 306. Yes they do make the engines run abit smoother and very slightly better fuel consumption but the best effect is to use normal fuel and a dose of millers dieselcleanplus in each tankful. THis used to give me 36mpg in the LDV instead of 33mpg and helps the Picasso to around 49mpg on a run instead of 45mpg. It smoothes the DI engine in the Picasso much more noticeably than the XUD9TD which was pretty smooth anyway. The swirl chambers in the IDI engine do a good job of controlling combustion without the need for a cleaner burn. This would probably be the same on T25.

1.7d & 5 speed box well looked after will do 250000 miles no problem .
vw manual state you can crusie at 70 with the 1.7d!
i have broke a few with over this as mileage!
a tad slower but i would pick the 1.7 over the td or 1.6d any day.
the 1.7 is built like the 1y internally with piston oil sprayers ect , the 1.6 engine is of an older more basic design
but personal opinion is vw didnt fit anything more than a 1.7 or 1.6td due to cooling issues ( remember the van was to be sold globally) and several pointers seem to amount to this hence fitting a larger diesel engine isant always that simple!
