Cruz wrote:custom and commercial sell lock barrels. tailgate is same as cab door on early vans

Hi cruz-

Ive just done my cab doors (new cylinders) and tailgate (same cylinder, i just cleaned it up) and re-keyed everything to the same key. However, on mine at least, the tailgate lock cylinder is certainly different to the cab door cylinders.

The square peg on the end of the tail gate cylinder is a larger diameter, has a chamfered corner (so only one way to assemble), and the cotter/punch pin to hold the lock lever on is thicker and longer. i took a load of pictures of the dismantling, and thought id write it up on here for anyone whos interested.

Tailgate lock on left, cab door on right. Not a brilliant pic, but see the cotter pin hole and square section.

I dont think i have a late rear lock, but other than my van being an odd one, this locks different alright..

Strange. I even put a cab door barrel in my early lock and it worked.

sorry cruz, missed this post!

OK.. so.. my van is an 84..

i know it has the early cooling system, but a late exhaust, an early slider, and apparently now, a late tailgate lock ! crossover year obviously! i can see that from the two pictures youve posted above, sorry for the confusion!! i dont have a big VW logo on the back, so i assumed it was early. I appreciate you looking into it :ok

my late tailgate lock..
