I may be still under last nights ale influence but the speedo end is poking through the grease cap and the square in the grease cap is not rounded yet your speedo does not work. I have run for years with no circlip on the cable with no problems

Your cable may have broken inside or there is a problem with your speedo.

Try removing the dash cover then remove the cable from the back of the speedo and secure it in a position where you can see it and take it for a run to see if the cable spins

Yeah...I was thinking along those lines but I do know if the cable isn't fully out the cap, the groove where the C clip sits is smaller and so the cable sometimes isn't driven as the cap turns.....

We will see.

You are of coarse right cruz , but it's easier to start with the easy stuff when we really don't know what the OP has already looked at ..... Next step would be to jack that wheel up off the floor and spin it and have a look see if the cable is turning at the top end.... Then we can advise on the very silly second hand prices of speedo heads .......

Thank you all for the help.

I wedged a split pin around the end of the cable, to keep it in place...still not working, pretty sure the cable isn't rotating in the square hole in the grease cap, so problem probably lies with cable, the connection to the speedo or the speedo itself? Will wait for 2nd pair of hands/eyes to come home to check if rotation at the tyre translates up the cable.

:ok ....so now it's a case of removing the intrument surround, pulling it upwards from the back (closet to the w/screen).
Pinching the white plastic lugs of the speedo cable end..pulling it away from the speedo head and then upwards so you can see the innards....either jack up and rotate the wheel or remove the grease cap again to rotate the inner cable.
Go from there.....

Thankgoodness someone is doing this topic. My speedo stopped working and I replaced the cable and now it does work thankfully. Two problems: 1. lost that blxxdy circlip now cable is kept in with small washer. 2. The rubber seal won't go in to the wheel housing with the cable inside. Have tried fitting it first but then the cable won't go in. Have considered just stripping the plastic cable sheath off first. Any suggestions?

First repair job I attempted after getting my van. :D

I went the expensive route and ordered the cable and grease cap together.
Too impatient to work out the possibilities :?: Beginning to learn slowly now to search for the causes!

Anyway I found perserverance allowed me to get the cable through the wheel to enable me to fit the circlip, so don't give up.My only tip would be, make sure that the cable end slides through the square hole in the grease cap before fitting. The finished lacquer on the grease cap on mine was preventing this happening.

A couple of taps with a square hole punch soon resolved that. Good Luck :ok
I am no mechanic, but I try......
