Re: T25 Syncro hightop project
Hi Andy, welcome to the madness of Syncro ownership !
As it happens I've a spare set of rear brake parts, everything you need apart from the backing plates, including FAG cylinders, drums/shoes, fitting kit, and gen. VW handbrake cables. Actually thinking about it I have some used backing plates but they need a blast to see how much thickness is left. Let me know if interested and I'll do you a good price.

Re: T25 Syncro hightop project
Cheers Jed,
My priorities are to get it back on the road asap. i'm focusing on the Brakes and running gear and to do whats the bare minimum to the body to get it through the MOT. Once MOT'd I can look closer and things and sort them out as a runner. I've already paid the price with a 60 splitty where I got it as a runner now its in a thousand pieces and not on the road 3 years later, not with the syncro.....
The paintwork is awful, I'm considering as a short term measure using 'rustolium' to make it a bit more presentable, then I may consider a bare metal respray to make it look the biz.
Cheers

Re: T25 Syncro hightop project
I would't worry about the cosmetics at this stage, sort the basics (mot standards, motor, transmission, difflocks etc.)
Looking at the rusty brake components you may need to replace the brake pipes (and hoses)?
Good luck

Re: T25 Syncro hightop project
Cheers Syncroandy, you never know I may be in touch about some bits n bobs. As luck would have it someone off ebay was selling the complete rear brakes, back plates, drums all in very good nick etc. everything I should need -- I hope
hi syncroBaz, yes definitely doing the hoses - sort of have no choice.....I cut them off to get the calipers off
I've looked at the brake pipes and I'm not happy with them so whilst the brakes are in bits ill be replacing them with copper. so the question is does any one know or have some info on how the pipe are routed?
Cheers
Andy

Re: T25 Syncro hightop project
I like the idea of camping, off roading, tinkering
, etc and of course Beers
, though not sure I'm liking the 'spending' idea bit
The moggies, got a few, the one in the picture is a 59 4-door, used as a daily Driver. got a 2-door convertible with a nissan skyline turbo/fuel injected engine in it, and my special toy a pick-up.. I know its not quite a syncro but its a lot of fun. Been restoring and modifying these for many years. Do most if not all of the work myself, also got a 68 bay, a 60 splitty and a 65 splitty double door....... but that's another story.
So I fancied something different, was hooked from seeing the vans in action at Vanfest.
here is a picture of the pick-up, a before and after..project took 5 months from start to finish, oh yea got a day job as well, was a lot of late nights
60 split in the background and the 65 double door to the right.

arty shot

65 convertible in the background.

more Syncro activity coming up, busy with the brakes at the mo, well whats left of them, seems to have swept up most of them so far.....

Errrrmmmm........ copy the ones in front of you?

Would the steel rim idea get it in garage? There's free rims on Brickyard if any good.
Agree, worst brakes I've ever seen! Has it been stood in the sand-dunes for past 5 years?

Keep calm & carry on!

Re: T25 Syncro hightop project
Thanks for all the comments.....
and so on to the near side rear....
I tool the wheel off and opened my eyes....great it looks ok

and then I took the drum off....not a lot left of the back plate

So I now know what's need for the brakes, which is more than I was thinking....now what was the phrase again.
ah yes.....MONEYPIT
So Simon I've coughed up some £££ and already got the bits....top service mate, had a bit of a free for all on Fleabay as well.
Ok so now I've stopped sweeping up my brakes, on to the nice bit the resto.
Front brakes first me thinks,
I'll let the pictures do most of the talking
A rusty mess that was once called a caliper

The essential tools

Home made caiper piston removal tool - Made from a piece of moggie chassis section, master cylinder and pedal to push out even the most stubborn piston.
now you can see how my moggies and V-Dubs live in harmony - flexy has the same thread

Off you pop - pistons out -and in good nick - so I only need a seal kit from Brakes International (top geezers)

Next installment over the weekend, a little treat. I'll be Acid dipping those rusty calipers with a before and after shot.

That is one rusty Syncro you have there. You look to be very capable and I'm sure this is going to a very good and interesting build thread. Keep it up!

Hi Fella - well this is a truly excellent start to the thread and you have me hooked already. Welcome! Its a bit rusty but you certainly seem to have the skills so I will keep myself up to date on next steps. I am up the road in Newbury so not far away!
