I forgot to mention the tick over stop valve (anti dieseling valve) this shuts off fuel at tick over, it is connected by a wire at the front of the carb (as you look at it) when disconnected and reconnected it should click. (ignition on)
increase the idle speed until the engine will sustain a tick over.
spray carb cleaner over various gasketed joints, pipes including the manifold.
If your lucky you'll get an increase in revs to indicate a leak.
usual suspects are...
Brake servo hose perished.
Choke pull down diaphragm holed
Dizzy diaphragm holed
second choke diaphragm holed
A search will provide the check process I can't be bothered to write it all out.

SHE IS ALIVE!!! After checking & setting the timing my van is now running (idling) with out a problem although it seems the exhaust is blowing a bit which will be sorted with a new gasket. Thanks for all your help and advice.
