Yes and you need a special tool to press down the shim buckets to get the shims out.

ALL the ORIGINAL diesel engines that were fitted to the T3 had tappet shims.....so if you have an untouched/un-modified 1.6 N/A, 1.7 N/A. or 1.6TD....they all need their tappets checking and shims replacing as necessary to achieve the correct clearance as I noted earlier in the thread.

If you don't have the tool you can change the shims by lifting the camshaft!

I've got the two push down tools (4/5cylinder) the pliers, a zero - 25mm micrometer and lots of shims, I shall have to start offering a £40 tappet service lol.

Heater blower is just a very time consuming job and given that time could be anything upto 10 nours, paying someone to do it for you would be very prohibitive. You need a very good 'car savy' mate to hold your hand and help.
