I forgot to take a pic when I did the first side. Took a quick on of the second side (but they both looked pretty much the same):

No. if you get the old crap out as ^^^^ then I would mask the hitop side and also the gutter, well half of it wioth a couple of layers the n a fgood pass makinbg sure you get it ni9ce and even and importantly it gets under the roof as far as is practical.

People lose sight of the fact that in most cases it's the sealant/adhesive that holds the roof on the van! If the bond has disintegrated it makes more sense to strip it and re-apply from the inside rather than just a smidgen squirted in along the outside edge to prevent water ingress.

Errr you may do it with a smidgen but thats a bodge, re read what i put and you can lift the van up by the roof ,if the roof is secured to the van yet has a small leak then local seal will suffice, I will stand to be corrected but this is how i been doinbg them for more years than i care to remember, (not all vw of course)

Very sharp and stiff (ooeerrr

Hi,
The biggest problem I encountered was once I had cleaned out the old sealant was waiting for the moisture that had seeped in to dry/evaporate.
Hotair gun or hair drier helps. Most adhesive/sealants have to be applied to dry surfaces.
