Part number of the relay fitted in position 3 in my 2.1 DJ '86/87 is:-

191 919 376 (It is marked VWAudi)
12V - EAP

the connections are marked:-

5 +15 -31 6

The other relays fitted on my van, are in position 5 (Radiator fan?)
Position 8 (Load sharing 'X' relay?)
Position 12 (Indicators/Hazard Lights)

Hope this helps, however, my coolant warning light flashes for a few seconds when ignition key is turned and then goes out, whether relay 3 is fitted or not!!!!

Also found:-

191 919 376A Relay, Coolant Level 27.55 (Dollars?)

Perhaps 'A' supercedes the 'obsolete' item.
Sods law says it will not fix the problem if you track one down!

I had this light flashing problem last year mine also stopped when warm after restarting. Problem was coolant passing up the two probes in the sensor and shorting the circuit. Once warmed up the coolant dried out and the light went off (after restarting) A replacement sensor cured the fault although the previous was new - I think there are some faulty ones about.

Just an update to those that can be asked.

The new relay arrived before christmas and the flashing stopped the day i ordered it! and has never returned. Which is good. I have now fitted new relay and still no flashing. So I think this proves the following

If you

Make sure your expansion bottle is full
Buy a new senser
Rewire the terminals
Put vasaline on them
Replace the relay or at least fiddle with it a few times

You should cure the problem and maybe end up with a spare relay. :P

I can believe it. The muppets at the VW in bedford last about 3 weeks in the job and when you chase a part they havent a clue what or where it is. then they ask you for a reference number they never gave you in the first place. Blame the last bloke.
