Well, my clonking turned into a juddering when I applied the brakes and has got worse. My mechanic mate jacked the van up and waggled the wheels. There was some play so tommorrow he is going to get a mate to undo the centrepiece of the inner wheel to have a look inside. He also reckons it has something to do with the brake pads rubbing up against each other. I dunno. I'll mention the drive shaft bolts to him.

Any other suggestions anybody?

Well we took the wheel off that was making the noise and looked inside the brake cover. One of the pads was not making full contact with the shoe (hte lining?) and two mechanics said I ought to buy new pads and shoes. Apparently it is not dangerous but decreases my stopping ability somehwat. I'm going to get it done tommorow.

Must say I'm a bit disapointed at the lack of response by everybody here to my problem. Robs excepted. :(

never mind mate maybe the ones who would normally answer a technical question are on hols weird time of the year, at least you gettin it sorted
also without peeps actually lookin and listening they may not want to voice there opinion incase they are totally wrong as i could have been a lot of different things to tell you or for you to change over and find that the problem is still there.
dont feel let down, i have had loadsa probs with my van and posted them here to which i have had alot of help even with silly things the WIKI is a good source of information along with other peoples comments dont loose faith mate we all get annoyed sometimes with our vans majority of the time they are called all sorts and there aint a member in this club that would disagree good luck with it anyway take care ROB!!!

Thanks Rob. More clunking started today and my mechanic mate said it was the wheel bearings on my front left wheel going. He jacked it up and there was loads of play when he wiggled the wheel. Why didn't the MOT people notice that three weeks ago?
I reckon driving over those bloody humps all day in London can't be doing the old van any good.
I reckon it's time to put it in for a full service. I have done some huge distances in the past year.

I had this problem in my bay. I took off the 2 driveshafts (nearly said rear driveshafts as if the bay has front ones! ), removed the CV joints and the boots, washed the CV joints in petrol, inspected for major damage, replaced boots and repacked joints and away I went! No hassle after that. Just use the proper CV grease. Makes all the difference.

Well bugger me! After all that messing about my mate took the hubcap off the front noisy wheel today and just tightened up the central nut and Hey Presto....end of problem! No more juddering when I brake and no clunking and sqeaking. That's all that needed doing.
What a relief. One mechanic told me I would have to change all the brake pads and discs and another told me I would need new wheel bearings. Both wrong.
Problem now is....taking off the central hub thingy has messed up the speedo. The cap has come off that it was attached to on the centre of the wheel so now I have to improvise a way of fixing that.

When and where is the Vanfest. Who knows, I might check it out.

sorry mate only just read your last post had the same prob with mine castle nut loose but mine is defo drive sahft didnt get one from VF as they were asking £25 they are only £35+vat new so gonna get steve shaw to order me one
your speedo cable has a small circlip at the end which attaches the cable to bearing cap maybe that has come off a new cable is inexpensive try changing the whole lot pretty easy but find out if its a push on or screw on at the back of your speedo good luck and glad you sorted it out ROB!!

Yes, I've lost the cap that the speedo was clipped to. Simple enough job if I can get hold of another cap. Where to find spares for these old vans?

Well, as I should have expected, the clonking started again. I thought it was just a matter of tightening that centre screw again. Nah, no such luck! I took the van to Jacks Garage in Notting Hill to get my sliding door fixed and asked them to take a look. Turns out the casing around the bearings had broken and the whole shebang could have collapsed at any time.
They did a great job of replacing the parts and fixed my sliding door. Not sure how long the sliding door will last as there is so much rust behind the sliders. May eventually have to get the whole panel replaced.
They charged me £295 for everything which I thought wasn't too bad considering what I charge for a few hours work in my game! That included new parts, hinge etc.
I came away feeling that they knew their stuff and would certainly bring my van back to them. They specialise in VW camper vans.

Right, what next is going to go wrong. Oh, the speedo is working again. They fixed that too.
