I have to agree with Clagmeister, there is nothing wrong with a 1.6 d
easy to work on and cheap for parts..... cant go wrong......
If you wanted to go fast you would not buy a T25.....
unless it had s a V10 TDI, which apparently has more torque than one of the latest ferrari's ..........

Hi clagmeister and lhd, I have just found a camper with a 1.6d lump in it, how slow are we talking here, unacceptably slow or sluggish.
What sort of fuel consumption are they capable of??
cheers for the replies, my wife wants to go to france in our camper and the petrol engined variants are very thirsty from what I can gather, 20 mpg would pretty much put us off doing big runs in one.
From a few conversations i've had with people £2500 doesnt get you much of a camper at all.
£3500 though gets you a niceish Aircooled early T25 westfalia.
I'm tempted to go for the power option with the 2.1 and LPG convert it.
A friend of mine has a 1.6Td. Its quick enough for a camper but the engine is on its way out. Its a REALLY well looked after van but that engine has to work hard for a living.
Once your up to speed it's only long hills that cause a problem...
they should, if driven carefully get 35-40mpg but it all depends on how much is in the van. Dont expect to be first off at the lights but that does not bother me.
The main reason I went for a 1.6d is to save money especially when going away as much as possible......
I bought a 1983 van because I could not afford a newer one so there is no way I could afford to run a 2.1, also to gas a petrol is another £800 unless already fitted.

I bought my T25 4 berth Autosleeper for £2800 in May. Needs a respray but only surface rust. The units inside are original and a bit tatty but a quick sand down and varnish should hopefully do the trick. Liners came up ok with 2 tins of Vanish carpet cleaner but the actual carpet stank (dog owner I think) so am putting down vinyl. Fridge, cooker and heater all work ok.
Also have 15" merc alloys in the garage to put on later when lowered 50mm.
Would post a picture of how it looked when I bought it but I dont have a website of my own.
It's been two years now and no problems at all, changed the cam belt and stopped two or three leaks that were present when purchased, but has never let me down. Well except once but you can hardly blame an engine for running out of diesel.
lhd........................
Doh!!! I have only run a bike out of fuel..and I wasn't too far from a petrol station thankfully.
The one we saw today was unfortunately of the canine variety!!
obvious rust holes which had been filled, window frames had some visible rust. couple of perished window rubbers.
I'll keep on looking.
Hiya Spot, sorry to here about your woes.
Seen two so far, three if you count a red lhd that had "honest looking rust" in every seem and window, the other two had more isolated but deeper looking rust and had had a blow-overs.
If they were MUCH cheaper I might have considered them and been able to afford to pay someone to cut it out or put new panels on.
They were so over the mark (in my opinion) with their prices I did not even consider a silly offer.
I think I might have to wait for the cold weather and offer what I WANT TO PAY!!!..
I don't mind paying a fair price for one that been bodged and gotten through an MOT, but they are asking for money that should only be asked for an honest bus, but I, and I suspect most people can spot filler and blow overs from a thousand yards!!!!!. And I have yet to even bother checking out the moving bits
Where are you in SW?
eyup duck,i to was having the same dilemma and i think i might have turned into a bit of a laughing stock by now with some of the members(as i was a bit of a green horn when i first came on here),but i was getting desperate to get something for the ball n chain to camp in,and she insisted on a t25,so in a moment of madness i bought a 1983 1.6 diesel pop top holdsworth villa for £800 off e-bay without even looking at it in person,i too needed a diesel for the running costs and prices were around £2500 for a rough one with a months mot,but this one had a blown engine and had been sitting for 5 years,i fiited a 1.9 diesel in it,mot'd it,taxed it,changed the gearbox for a better ratio, fixed the wiring and repaired the camper interior for £1000,£250 of that was for delivery from bognor regis to stoke!),so now ive still got a very crappy camper thats had a grand spent on it but only owes me the price of a rough petrol example with a little bit of t & t,great way of doing it if youve got the time but not the money like me!!!!!!,p.s marlady is heading down to newquay in it tomorrow for a fortnight, give her a wave if anybody sees it,its easy to spot, theres more rust scabs on it than is on the titanic( the van that is,not marlady!!!!)................
Mabelthebus, just thought I'd tell you that Dave (Timbertech) still has the red 1986 van with side windows for sale. It's waiting for a camper interior to the purchasers speclfication. (see advert in 'vehicles for sale').
Dave e-mailed me on Thursday morning to say it is still for sale but I collected my 'new' T25 from a club member on Wednesday evening.
