At around £14.00 for a good quality Merle thermoswitch..certainly worth changing if you have any doubts...

From 1986
Stage 1 cut in 89 - 94C cut out 81C
Stage 2 cut in 95 - 100C cut out 87C

Rad flush sounds like a good idea
Plus an oil cooler really does protect the oil from getting so hot that is fails.

I had a similar problem with a Volvo 740td, turned out the radiator was badly clogged up, replaced it and the car ran cooler than it ever had.My gauge fluctuates slightly on my westy but I have found that the water pump drive belt requires regular checking and tightening.I now know if it is a bit slack as the gauge rises further when on hills but the belt does not squeal.

Just had a look over the engine, while checking which bits to buy and I noticed a loose wire tucked away out of the way.

Is this the switch for the aux water pump?

I have a bit of a squeel on start up but the belt tension seems ok, one of the reasons that I am going to replace the water pump. Such a pain to tension though.

Merle thermoswitch, are they the ones on the side of the rad (getting confused by the amount of switches involved :D )

Has anyone used the thermostat from brickwerks that cuts in a bit earlier, worth buying?

Finally got around to fitting the bits, took it for a test drive 30 mins on the motorway and the temparature gauge just sat on the half way mark. :D

No power to the aux water pump even after fitting a new switch though, so will have to get the wiring diagram out
